Why Our Adoption Fees Are What They Are?

One of the questions we hear most often is “Why are your adoption fees higher than the county shelter’s?” It’s a fair question and we’d like to explain.

First, we want to say that we fully support adopting from your local animal control shelter. Every pet deserves a loving home, regardless of where they are adopted from.

However, it’s important to understand that there is a significant difference between a government-operated shelter and a nonprofit animal rescue.

Animal control facilities are government agencies whose primary responsibility is to protect both animals and the public by managing homeless, stray, neglected, and sometimes dangerous animals. They perform an incredibly difficult job, often while caring for hundreds of animals at a time. Because they are required to accept animals regardless of age, health, temperament, or available space, many shelters are constantly operating at or above capacity. When resources become limited, difficult decisions sometimes have to be made.

This is where Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue - and many other nonprofit rescues step in.

Our mission is to save the dogs that need us the most: those at-risk due to overcrowding, those requiring extensive medical care, those with behavioral challenges, and those that simply need more time than a busy shelter can provide. We work closely with Palm Beach Animal Care & Control to help relieve overcrowding and give these deserving dogs the second chance they might not otherwise receive.

Unlike government shelters, Dezzy’s Second Chance receives no regular government funding. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we rely on donations, fundraising events, grants, and adoption fees to continue saving lives. While grants are available, thousands of nonprofits compete for the same limited funding, making them far from guaranteed.

Our adoption fees help offset only a portion of the care every dog receives before going home. Every adopted dog is provided with:

Spay or neuter surgery
Microchip
Age-appropriate vaccinations
IDEXX 4Dx blood parasite test
Heartworm prevention
Flea and tick prevention
Nail trim
Health exam and routine veterinary care
Bloodwork, thyroid testing, and urinalysis
Dental cleaning and extractions, if needed
Deworming

For many dogs, however, this is just the beginning. Because we specialize in saving dogs with medical and behavioral needs, we frequently provide treatments that far exceed the adoption fee. These services may include:

Treatment for respiratory, skin, ear, or eye infections
Allergy treatment
Mass removals and biopsies
Eye surgeries, including eye removal
Amputations
Cesarean sections
Heartworm treatment
X-rays and diagnostic testing
Foreign body surgeries
Emergency pyometra surgeries
Orthopedic procedures
Behavioral rehabilitation for anxiety or aggression

In addition to veterinary care, adoption fees do not cover the daily costs of operating the rescue including feeding quality food, monthly heartworm prevention, medications, insurance, utilities, building maintenance, cleaning supplies, transportation, enrichment, advertising and countless other expenses involved in providing exceptional care.

While an adoption fee of $500 or $600 may seem high at first glance, it represents only a fraction of what is invested in many of the dogs we save. The remainder is made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and supporters who believe every dog deserves a second chance.
