Woman sacrifices health, marriage and career to save the lives of animals
“It was 3:30 in the morning and I was alone in the house. Bloody, dog body parts and dog guts were all over the walls – blood splattered everywhere – dead dogs surrounded my feet,” shared Sandra Dezelan Axelband, as she wept.

Who she is: Axelband first came to the attention of The Palm Beach Post back in 2004 in a story about local do-gooders. At the time, she was delivering meals to homeless people out of the back of her Mercedes. The self-employed interior designer had a successful, glamorous business in Broward County decorating the Miami homes of CEOs and professional athletes. She wanted to show her gratitude for all she’d received.
Delray woman leads animal rescue group
In 2003, Delray Beach resident Sandra Dezelan, owner of a successful interior design firm, married a local veterinarian.
Spending time in his animal hospital doing interior renovations, she started helping out in the kennel and front reception desk. Her life focus changed.
